Dear DTT Diary

Check out some extracts from the weekly Monday e-newsletter sent by Dare To Tri Coach Derick Marcisz to all members of the Modern Athlete DARE TO TRI Academy, our dedicated triathlon training group that has transformed hundreds of everyday athletes and even ‘couch potatoes’ into triathletes. The Academy’s focus right now is the Dare to Tri Let’s Do 70.3 Durban Programme, which sees more than 40 DTT triathletes entered for 70.3 Durban on 19 June, including quite a few novices.

Monday 18 April

Group training was well attended this weekend. The weather is holding and it was actually very warm on both Saturday and Sunday, with no wind at all! The water temp at VLC Germiston is still a very comfortable 22 degrees and we will keep swimming there for as long as possible. Saturday morning the DTT guys and girls joined the Jeppe groups for a 10km or 15km run. A small group swam on Saturday afternoon and we also discussed and practised some bike maintenance, and then on Sunday a good group rode 80km in the Cradle.

Monday 25 April

Your coach and quite a few other missed Saturday’s run due to a really good “Dare to Dance” party on Friday night… but Saturday afternoon we swam at VLC as usual. The water is getting colder, was 20 degrees. Sunday’s ride saw a good group ride 94km – we started in the mist and cold, and then the sun came out, and so did the wind! We managed to keep the group together most of the time, resulting in a good average pace of around 27km/hour for our longest ride so far! Well done all, and so good to see the progress that Kirsty, Nico and Shaun have made. Shaun was even leading the group, breaking the wind in the closing stages! Really great, considering that a year ago he struggled with his first 45km ride in the Cradle!

Monday 3 May

The recent public holidays meant a chance to do some good training either with or without the group! Some ran in one of the many road races these past few days – would love to hear how you did, so drop me a mail. On Freedom Day we had a great group Brick session that included a 34km bike time trial and 4km run. Saturday morning was our usual long run – some did 10km, others 15km, with cappuccinos and muffins afterwards. I missed the Sunday long ride in the Cradle due to a sore throat, but a few of us managed to ride 70km to 90km on Monday.

Monday 9 May

On Saturday we had a good turnout for our usual morning run – some ran 15km and a few did 18km. This week I have 18km scheduled, so please join us. It is now too cold to do an open water swim on Saturday afternoons, so this moves to a heated pool session, and I am available to assist with improving your technique. On Sunday the ride was “cold and windy,” and with Mother’s Day, many had to get home early, so we rode between 60km and 88km, all at a good pace considering the wind! My group rode 88km at 28km/h average, which is great in the conditions! I really encourage you all to make an effort to come and train with the group. The members encourage each other, share stories and get the opportunity to chat to me and the other athletes about their training. Also, feel free at any time to e-mail me with any questions you have about training.

The new Dare to Tri 2016/2017 season will start on 1 July, with the 5150 Bela Bela on 20 August the first target race as we build up to the 2017 Ironman 70.3 East London and Ironman PE. We also plan to focus on a new event, the Cape Ultra, in September in the Winelands! DTT members receive expert coaching and weekend coached group training sessions. You cannot get this level of coaching at this price anywhere else!
