The fourth day of the Old Mutual joberg2c made the hard slog of the first three worth it as riders crossed over the border of the Free State into the riding heaven that KwaZulu Natal offers. The 93km journey from Sterkfontein to Winterton was filled with many highlights as riders got to sample some amazing trails, including the spectacular view from 'Great Wall my China'

The day started warmer than expected, and for the first time in four days with only one layer of clothing on the start line. We started 6km from camp, so at about 30 minutes before our actual start time we began the slow climb up to the gravel roads of sterkte in.

Being officially 3rd last in my category I took the tactical decision to jump a batch and get the 60 minutes penalty to make sure I was last - it really isn't all about racing!

The start saw us ride a lot of little climbs all manageable, so a nice way to ease into the day. It gave me the opportunity to ride with some of the guys from Surgeons for Little Lives for the first 5km from which I proceeded to follow some fast Belgians up the climb.

The view from the top was incredible, where I took a break to chat to Wappo. Every climb is worth the effort when you know you have an amazing descent waiting for you, this one was particularly incredible done with a smile the whole way down.

My enthusiasm though was maybe to high as I managed to destroy my rear tyre 2km from water point one. Luckily Jason from Trailhead was once again there to come to my rescue and after fitting a proper Enduro Tyre I was once again on my way.

The rest of the day was fast and fun with not too much climbing. The third water point was my highlight of the day with the best sausage I've ever had. The last 20 km had plenty of single track with big berms that had me riding with a big smile bringing out the kid in me!

All in all it was a great day and I am really looking forward to tomorrow!

Day 5 of the Old Mutual joBerg2c is the big one, 123km journey from Em’seni in Winterton to Clifton school in Nottingham Road. The day also features the most climbing in the race, with the last 30km featuring the bulk of the hills. Riders will definitely enjoy the sight of the day 5 finish line.
