The last day of the Old Mutual joberg2c dawned with a neutral stage, known as the 'Champagne Stage' riders were treated to a day of celebrations in honour of their victory of completing the nine day journey spanning 900km.

The day started crisp and dry, with it being the 'Champagne Stage' we where requested to make green our theme colour, the vibe was completely relaxed and you could start anytime between 07h00 and 08h00, whatever you felt like doing. I started rolling at 7h15 with two friends, who incidentally were in the top twenty of the General Classification - my claim to fame for the day.

This kind of stage is just fun, you get to ride slowly and chat to everyone in the field without any pressure to race or get to the finish as quickly as possible, being a neutral stage the final results had been set the previous night.

The usual route for day nine unfolded before us, rolling single track through sugar cane interspersed with some blue gum plantation climbs, we got to the first water point very quickly. Always a welcome sight the guys had many treats on offer with two fellow riders handing out red wine - what a wonderful stop.

The next 29 km or so of sugar cane fields we got into Vernon crooks after a wonderful piece of single track trough the trees. I tried to climb the steep climb in the nature reserve but didn't have enough strength left in the legs. I climbed a little more then got my reward, a wonderful bush decent into the valley.

The second water point arrived faster than expected, as usual the Lions Club put on an amazing spread as well as a team to clean our dirty riding glasses. Trevor the Squirt lube guy is my man of the day, working all day without complaint, he must have lubing 300/400 chains a day.

The last part of the of the day was pretty hot and long with lots of climbing, but with all climbing on this race the pay off is loads of great forest roads and single track. The forests of the bike park were an absolute treat, totally gorgeous! A mountain bikers dream.

Then came the sandy climb next to the N2 and the first clear view of the sea. A few more km of sand road and the finish valley came into view. I rode the last few km slowly trying to take in the whole journey. The floating bridge came into view and finally the finish line. I rode the bridge without any issues and made my way to the finish line.

900km nine days so many wonderful people and trails. What a privilege, definitely a bucket list ride. If you haven;t signed up yet, do it, its an adventure you will never forget!
